Pack as much wood as you can in the stove before you turn in and when it’s burning good set the draft so that it’s just barely drawing air. You can check this with a match. You want the match flame to just pull a little into the draft opening. You can close the stovepipe damper enough to control draft flow also. The point of all this is to have your fire basically smolder all night while you’re in bed and have enough wood left in the morning to blaze up quickly when you open the draft. The procedure is known as "banking the fire".

I put in a log as big as my stove will take,
set the damper at low,
check it at 2 am do it again if needed

If your wood is wet it will not burn as efficiently. How long was your wood left to season? I had an entire cord of wood that burned very poorly but noticed it had a lot of moisture in it. Like the others said other than setting your damper and filling the stove there isn’t a lot more I can think of to check. What model of wood stove do you have? Some have adjustments and an ash dump which may no close properly allowing more air to enter and a faster burn.

Try loading up the stove until you can’t get another piece of wood into it, then turn the damper down almost to shut & I think you will find it’s still going in the morning only just, but then you have to re-stoke it.
Cheers

Are you using the same wood …you need to stoke the fire with hardwood and adjust your draft to slightly open so the fire burns slowly ~
