what is more efficient at heating a woodstove insert or a woodstove?
I have a fieldstone fireplace with 4 square feet of flasing in front of it.I want to use a woodstove insert to save money on installation and make more room in the cabin.

The more of the stove out in the room the more heat you will get due to the increased surface area. Just get one with heavy metal and be care full not to get burned on the hot surfaces.

I don’t know what a woodstove insert is but I do know that for the last 7 years we have used only a woodstove to heat our house during winter. Granted we live in Texas, but still, a woodstove to heat a 3 bedroom house is pretty good.

Go with the insert. It will heat that cabin very well and not take up any room.

The insert is the way to go. It takes less fuel (wood, pellets, etc) to create the same amount of heat the fire place puts out. I’d consider pellets because many areas of the country are banning wood burning due to the pollution that it puts out. Good Luck
The greater the surface area of the stove the more heat you’ll get in the room and the less will go up the chimney.
I have one like that which I just stuck into the fireplace (was a perfect fit), and now I can use much longer pieces of wood, and I would say the heat from the wood has multiplied by at least 4, over when I just used the fireplace as such.
