What has become of ashtrays and lighters in cars?
When I was a kid, my parents cars always had at least 5 ashtrays and sometimes 4 lighters. This was cool, especially for us kids in the back seat. Three of us could sit back there and we all had our individual ashtrays. Those electric lighters were nice, too, since they had no flame, they were safer for us to use.
Nowadays our cars only have one ashtray, and it is in the front. What are the people in the back supposed to do, use the window? This is illegal in most places and can start fires.
What’s the deal?

It is to cut cost for the manufacturers. the less parts, the less money put out.

I was in a friends car that had lighters in the backseat.. i was amazed, and in aww.. but he told me they didnt work
So i pushed it in, and stuck my thumb inside it.. he was wrong it DID work and got stuck to my thumb and melted the skin.. since it was an older lighter it didnt feel warm to the touch on the outside. Maybe thats why they dont have them.. stupid people like me might jam their thumb in.
oh an i still think your full of shitt.

Modern thinking puts the children in the back seat. Children are not supposed to be smoking. So don’t put ash trays in for the rear seats. I do remember one of my mother’s old cars had ash trays in the the arm rests. Now a days the extra cigarette lighter sockets made available in the rear seats for powering entertainment equipment. Now that smoking is persona non grata the auto makers have given up on the concept since it also made it easier to style the area and used less parts. I recently rented a Chevy Malibu and it didn’t even have an ashtray in the front, just 2 lighter sockets.
