Were those gas stoves, with electric pilots, made so both utility companies could make some $ off them?
I never saw one of those before….it looked old….saw it while helping someone look at apartments

They actually result in slightly reduced utility bills, largely because the stove uses less gas.
In old stoves, a small amount of gas burned all the time, usually in two pilot lights for the cooktop and another for the broiler/oven. The ones with an electric pilot burn no gas until the burner is turned on. A minuscule amount of electricity is used to create a spark that lights the gas flowing at the burner.
