Our brick fireplace is rolling smoke back into the house.?

We recently bought a tri-level house built in 1973.
In the sunken family room there is a huge red brick wood fireplace that had a woodstove ducked into the chimney by way of the face.
After we removed the woodstove we built a fire.
All of the smoke rolled right out and filled the whole house. After putting the fire out I noticed that the hole to the flue was only as big as a single red brick. The bricks on the top inside appear to be 4in fire bricks…and no damper. I do not know for sure if this is typical as this is the first brick fireplace I have owned all the rest were inserts. How can I remedy this so I can enjoy this lovely fireplace in the winter without dying from Carbon Monoxide poisoning? Also the lathe on both sides of the inside are exposed inside. I don’t remember ever seeing them on any of my previous fireplaces.
Please no mean or nasty comments, the previous owners were using the woodstove as a secondary heat source a week before we moved in and had stated they just got the chimney cleaned a month prior.

Are Pellet Fireplaces good economical heat sources?

My whole house is radiant heat by propane gas. During the winters here in Maine we can burn through a lot and it gets expensive. I like fireplaces but do not want the mess of a wood fireplace so I was looking the route of a pellet fireplace. Can anyone tell me if they are economical and possibly how much pellets were used during winter months?

Bird stuck in the fireplace?

It seems that I have some type of a bird that is stuck in my wood fireplace. It is not in the duct, I looked with a flash light and I can see all the way till the other side of the chimney. It is all clean until there. From the sound it seems that the bird is between the duct and the the wall. I can hear it very close, scratching and pecking inside.

Any ideas how to get it out ? Or who to call ? Animal control ? Fireplace specialist ? Repairman ?
The bird does not seem to be in the pipe…I looked, its somewhere in between

What colour should I paint my study?

This is the place where my computer and desk are, my homework room. As well it also functions as a TV room.

It is a larger room. Has bay windows. Has a dark wood fireplace.

I want this room to give me energy, encourage me to study and just relax in.

What colour would you suggest?

I'm moving to a new apartment and I want to paint. What are some of your favorite wall colors?

A little bit about the place – it’s in a house that was built in 1906 and is a part of the Virginia Historical Society. There is a white, built-in craftsman-style china cabinet in the kitchen and an original dark wood fireplace in the bedroom. I tend to like more earthy colors but am open to anything.
I suppose my question is – what colors can I paint the walls to keep with the antiqueness of the place while remaining modern?
My landlord said that I am allowed to paint and color I’d like to and I understand that I must paint it back to the original color when I leave (he is supplying the paint).
any** color I’d like to

What defines a noncombustible surface for a hearth pad?

I have to install a hearth pad for the EPA wood fireplace I’m installing. Can I simply lay tile or marble as the hearth or are there other requirements to make it noncombustible?

Can I light a gas fireplace without the gas being on?

I just moved into my new house this weekend and the gas company cannot come out to turn on the gas until next week. We are freezing so I just went to buy some Duraflame logs but I’m not sure how or if I can light the logs without the gas being on. My guess is the pilot is not on so I am wondering if can I just light the fireplace without the gas? When I turned the key I heard a hissing sound. Please advise…
The hissing is not continuous, I just turned the key to see if it was any gas left in the line and it hissed so I quickly turned the key to the off position. I know the gas is not on because we just moved in. There are no gas fumes. Can I just light the log like you would in a wood fireplace without the gas being on or is this dangerous?

How much wood in my fireplace?

I just moved into a home with a wood fireplace. This is the first wood fireplace I have used so please excuse what is probably a dumb question. It is a closed fireplace with glass doors and vents with blowers that seem to take room air from the bottom and warm it around the fireplace box, then push it out the top.

My question is, how much wood should I be putting in at a time? Does this operate in a fashion that putting in more wood will give me more heat or be a waste of wood? I have been burning 1-3 18 inch split logs at a time.

Anything else I should know that I may be missing?

Thanks
