Question about replacing my fireplace with a wood burning stove.?

I’m taking my existing fireplace out, and putting a Wood burning stove in it’s place. I would like to be able to join the flue from the wood burning stove to the existing flue. I pulled the panelling off from around my fireplace last night, and I noticed that the flue has a sticker on it that says "Type L Vent" it’s a premanufactured fireplace from 1955, and I’m curious to know if this type of vent is still in use, or if it was long gone. I realize that different area’s have different codes, so I was just curious to know if it’s standard practice to tie into the existing flues for this type of change-over. I tried calling the building code department in my area, but they are of no help.

Thanks!

lung disease, could a low ceiling cause problems ?

My friends live in the mountains, high up, snow level. They live in a little cabin that has low ceilings. Over the years they have had a wood burning stove and now a pellet stove. One of my friends has lung damage. He is very tall, the ceiling is very low. I have always had an uneasy feeling feeling about his health. His lung condition is getting worse. Could the low ceiling be toxic somehow, not allowing the air to circulate or something???

Safety questions about a wood-burning stove in a garage.

http://www.countrysidemag.com/issues/88/88-6/W_Wayne_Robertson.html We want to put a wood-burning stove like the one in the link in our garage. The walls are unfinished (exposed studs). What can we use on the walls for fireproofing? Would cement blocks work? Looking for cheap here, but it must be safe.

How do I find out how far from the wall the stove has to be placed? Do we need to have it inspected before using it? Would it be the fire department that does that? Thanks very much for your help.

Does anyone know of a brand of wood burning stove which exhauses out the back instead of the top?

Plasma above a wood burning stove?

I already have a plasma TV above my fireplace, which I have never lit a fire in. My husband and I are thinking of ripping out the fireplace and putting in a wood burning stove. Everyone is saying that the heat that radiates from the stove will have a bad effect on the plasma, has anyone else put a plasma above a stove and it was OK.
Thanks for looking.

chimney won't draw all the time?

WE BUILT THIS HOUSE 9 YEARS AGO AND THAT IS WHEN THE WOOD BURNING STOVE INSERT WAS INSTALLED IN A BRICK FIREPLACE. WE HAVE NOT HAD A PROBLEM WITH UNTIL THIS YEAR. THE PROBLEM IS SOMETIMES IT WON’T DRAW WHEN STARTING A FIRE AND OTHER TIMES YOU MAY HAVE A FIRE BURNING AND IT QUITS DRAWING. WE HAVE HAD THE CHIMNEY CLEANED TWICE IN THE LAST THREE WEEKS, NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE TO THE HOUSE AS FAR AS REMODEL OR EXTRA SEALING OF DOORS OR WINDOWS. THE TEMPERATURES HAVE BEEN IN LOW 30′S TO 40 DEGREES FOR THE LAST TWO WEEKS, WIND HAS BEEN LIGHT TO 20MPH FOR THIS SAME PERIOD OF TIME AND RAINY. THE AREA AROUND THE HOUSE HAS NOT CHANGED AS FAR AS OTHER HOUSES BEING BUILT OR TREES GROWING UP OR BEING CUT DOWN. WE LIVE IN NORTH CENTRAL TEXAS, JUST NORTH OF DALLAS ABOUT 40 MILES. I AM OUT OF IDEAS. NEED SOME HELP.

Two mostly grey landscape paintings, 1 large, 1 smaller – I don't like them, most walls are occupied?

already with paintings, prints, that I do like.
It’s all the grey that makes them unattractive. One was gift from friend, another is one I won in a church raffle.
None of my rooms have grey in them. One has black iron stair rail, a little black on tiles around the fireplace. The fireplace now has wood-burning stove insert, standing a couple of feet out from wall, so hides areas of fireplace tile.
Is there any way to display them that will make more attractive?
edited: Hmn. Two good answers, thank you. The friend’s gift i am reluctant to part with, so the suggestions give me hope. And I would never have thought of them by self!
