I have a wood burning fireplace, which I use every nite. As a result, I have a lot of ashes. Can I add them to my compost pile?? Regards-Bob.
My house was built in 1950 and has a coal burning fireplace. When I look up the vent, it is stuffed with paper and when my husband was on the roof cleaning out the gutters we see that the chimney is closed up. We were told when we bought the house that is had been "permanently closed up." My question is, is there a way to have it opened up and gas or electric logs put in? There’s no way it could be turned into a wood burning fireplace because there is very little depth as it was meant for coal. Anyone know anything about this stuff, suggestions on whom to call, prices etc.? I’m clueless. Thanks!
I’m interested in a nature getaway weekend in the Shenandoah Valley, or anywhere within 3 hour drive of DC for that matter. Can anyone give recommendations on where to stay that is isolated/secluded/in the middle of the woods (basically I don’t want to see hordes of tourists as I step right outside)? The only things important to me are private bathroom and wood-burning fireplace, don’t care about phone/TV. Needless to say I would prefer to be close to trails, waterfalls/lakes, wineries and outdoor activities such as hiking, horseback riding, canoeing, fall foliage viewing, etc.
Thank you for any suggestions.
Wood burning chimney users, will you please share with me the advantages and disadvantages of a wood burning fireplace? We are considering keeping the wood burning fireplace and/or using an electric one. Thank you.
I want to convert my wood burning fireplace to one that has gas logs. Who do I get to run the gas line? The gas company? A plumber? A contractor? I have no idea where to start…
Our home is all electric but has a wood burning fireplace. If we had a fire burning, let it go out, and then go to bed, would the carbon monoxide stay in the air? Or does it filter out?
We use the Pine Mountain logs and they are supposed to burn cleaner. But we are still wondering. Perhaps we should have a window open during/after burning? But this does defeat the purpose of trying to warm yourself with a fire.
Thoughts anyone?
Yes, they are manufactured logs. "Pine Mountain" is the brand name. We bought them at Home Depot.
It’s a standard, wood burning fireplace with chimney / flue. I don’t understand the purpose of the glass doors.
I have a wood burning fireplace, and the damper is wide open all the time. When you get up in the morning it is almost as cold in that room as it is outside. There is no place on the out side of the fire place to adjust the damper, what can I do to access the damper with out getting down and having to look up inside the fireplace to adjust the damper.
Thank you,

So there is no way to hook something on the damper so you can operate it from the outside of the fireplace? With the chimney bag you have to wait for the fireplace to cool off before it can be put in when not in use?Seems like alot of trouble. LOL
Thanks in advance.
I had a handyman helped me remove the wood burning fireplace in my living room to make the space a built in media center since I never used the fireplace. I can stand inside the open space now & see all the way up to the top of the chimmney. Should I have a roofer come out to close off the chimmney or just leave it alone? The handyman is going to put in a ceiling in the new opening, but I don’t know if I should have the whole chimmney stack removed off the house or just cap the top off or what??? THANKS for any ideas!
