how far away from gas fireplace opening must wooden mantle be installed?

i want to add a more elaborate wooden mantel to my brick, gas fireplace. it is vented to the outside. i also want to install a tile border around fire box and then install the wood mantel around the tile. i havej just a simple mantle across the top at present. i want to up date and add vertal side pieces to it. i have 6 3/4" on each side to work with and 15 1/4" between bottom of mantle and firebox. where can i find this info.?

I need a way to redirect heat from a glassed in gas fireplace?

The heat rises and the mantle gets hot. Is there any way to divert the heat forward into the room instead of it going upward? The fireplace has a small metal lip over the glases in area ( about! 1/2 inches deep)

80's brick fireplace?

how can an 80’s brick fireplace be updated? its the whole shebang: Fablon covered mantle, two side bits, one of which is for the tv and the other for a lamp. I have started by dmolishing the 2 side brick "areas" and just left the surround, how do i update it from here? cant demolish, just new wallpaper!
the "mantle" is just a bit of wood ontop of the bricks. The bricks are not flush into the wall, they stick out, it is painted cream with a beech effect fablon on the "mantle" and the only fires that fit into it are old fashioned! the nice ones are an inch too high. the opening is 22 inches highj and fires must be electric

Want to glass tile over a brick fireplace- where do I start?

We’re installing our TV over our gas fireplace and we want a more modern look in place of the traditional brick surround. My husband is going to mount our Plasma on the wall and build a larger/sturdier mantle that goes into a shelving unit on the floor to hold our electronic equipment. We want to tile the surround using either glass mosaics or a travertine subway tile. I really want to do the tiling myself and want to surprise my husband by not having to ask for his help. I’d like to leave the brick up and just tile over it…. Not sure if this will work though. Can someone please help me… I can post pictures if necessary.

Thanks!!!!

Can an old fireplace be converted to a gas log?

I live in an 80 year old house that has a fireplace in the living room. It was put in to be purely decorative (YEARS ago, before I owned the house) and I am thinking of putting a gas log in it. How safe is this to do? The floor below it is tile over a wood base floor. The fireplace itself is all brick except for the mantle, which is wooden. The back of the fireplace is one layer of brick thick that lies right up against the wall of my house (which is plaster/wood construction). I just want to make sure this is a safe thing to do…

is it a fire hazard if you have a gas log set for your fireplace and there is a dry wreath hanging above the?

mantle of the fireplace. it looks like the pilot light is buried pretty well under the logs, if something fell in could it catch fire?

also, is it risky to have something dry too close to the fireplace? could a pilot light ever shoot a spark?

Advice for installation of Marble Fireplace Please?

We recently bought an Aurora "Micro-Marble" fireplace from a DIY store. We bought it on impulse and thought it was a good idea at the time.

It comes in 6 pieces including the hearth and the back panel.
The instructions are very minimal with basic diagrams which only tell us what goes where.

There were no fixings, no advice on how to assemble it or anything.

It looks to us like we need to use some sort of resin to bond the mantle and legs together, but what do we use? Whats going to be strong enough to hold it? Its so heavy!

Its only to house an electric fire, theres no chimney or flue to worry about so it’s purely decorative, but it needs to be fixed together, and also anchored to the wall.

To be honest, we’re regretting buying it, as we really have no idea what we’re supposed to do but can’t take it back now so we’d best get on with it.

Please if you know what we should be using and how to fix it I would very much appreciate your advice!
Many thanks & kind regards

I am installing a new fireplace surround with mantle. Should I paint it with white laquer or paint to match the trim in the room (off-white)? The walls are a neutral beigy color. Any pics would be aprreciated.

I am asking I should paint it a stark white or should I match the trim color instead.

Upgrade My Fireplace–Please!!!?

Hi There! I’m redecorating the den and my fireplace is affecting the color scheme. The mantle/surround is white and actual fireplace is black which is fine. The problem is the area btwn the surround and fireplace. It’s marble with white and gray veins. I really like mosaic glass tiles and thought this would be a great ideal to update the color on the fireplace in order to go with the color scheme. I’ve seen glass tile on walls on the HGTV shows. My question is can you install mosaic glass tile on top of marble?

I’m looking for a TV show that aired in January 2007 that featured a patio makeover. Can you help me find it?

It was a single woman who was ready to move because she didn’t have any privacy on her backyard patio. They ended up putting a screen-wall in between her patio and the neighbors. This screen-wall was different because they built in a fireplace-look to it by putting a stained glass window above a mantle and then bought a fireplace front to put under the mantle. In the "faux" fireplace, I believe they put that wavy glass. On both sides of the "fireplace" they built the wall out but left open spaces in between the frame for her to hang outdoor lamps. They bought the fireplace front at an antique store I believe. It was a beautiful way to get privacy and yet have a unique look of a fireplace.
