About how much should I expect to pay for a custom built fireplace surround and mantel?

About 8 feet wide, curio shelves on the side. Curved base, mantle. The hood would go all the way up to the ceiling (9 ft), with crown molding at the top, and pillars and corbels holding up the mantel.

All made from oak plywood and solid oak, with a tiled marble base. This is new construction, and I already have the gas insert.

Just looking for a generic "about this much" figure, before I start looking around.

how should i prioritize the following home improvements? fireplace, new kitchen, bathroom in basement?

i eventually want to do all three of these things. in what order should i do them in order to maximize my return on investment in the event i had to move and sell before i completed all three things? there is currently a fireplace now but it is ugly painted white brick and want to replace it with a floor to 5 foot high mantle with granite worked in and a gas fireplace log set. the whole cost of that job would be 5k. i have read that fireplaces add more value as far as home improvements go than any other improvement.

the current kitchen was from the 1960s and redoing that with granite countertops and new cabinets and tile and a new fridge and oven would probably be 10k-15k for the quality we wanted.

adding a bathroom to the basement would change the house from 1 to 2 baths and would probably cost about 5k for the level of quality we wanted.

how should i order these projects?

How do I hang a wood mantle to drywall?

I have a nice piece of wood that I found in my garage and I would like to hang it above my fireplace as a mantle. The problem is that it weighs a lot (maybe 50 lbs). How could I safely hang this to the drywall above my fireplace?
I would like the mantle to be "floating". I don’t want any brackets.

What do you have in your fireplace off season?

Since summer is here, we will not be using our wood burning fireplace for a while. The "rack" has to stay in since it is attached to the gas starter. I have seen candles and fake greenery, but what else looks good in a fireplace? All the ideas on the web talk about the mantle, which is already covered; can’t find any ideas for the inside…

Should an LCD-TV be wall-mounted directly over a gas fireplace? Will the heat or flue cause problems?

I just bought a new condo with a gas fireplace in the living room, and I’m purchasing a 40" LCD-TV for the space above it. However, the fireplace has no mantle, which leads me to wonder if the heat escaping upward from the fireplace will shorten the life of the LCD or worse.

Also, will the installer be able to route all the cables and power outlet behind the TV properly, even with the flue directly behind? I imagine with masonry/wood-burning fireplaces, this is less of an issue, since the flue is set back deeper.

Thanks in advance for advice from anyone who’s been in the same situation!

I am making a cut out over the mantle of my gas fireplace with rear exhaust for dvd. How do I insulate?

My tv is mounted above the gas fireplace. The exhaust goes out the back of the house. I want to cut out above the mantle and build a little alcove to house the cable box, dvd player and xbox. I’m only wanting to cut 6-8 inches up and about 12 inches deep all the way across the mantle.
