Heating Upgrade: Boiler + Radiators? Advice?

We are going to put in a new heat system this year. Forced-air, ductwork is not an option.. we are leaning towards a gas fireplace install (about k) with possibly supplemental baseboard electric.

Live in Pac. Northwest – so not a lot of freezing cold, but damp cold. House is 100y.o.

One alternate option we are considering is radiators (salvage) with plastic flex-piping and a small efficient boiler.. any one installed a similar system? expensive? worth it?

Cleaning a gas fireplace?

I took apart my gas fireplace to clean the area, but now when I turn it on I can hear the gas coming out – much louder than before. The sound is like the rush or air going through the pipe and holes that allow the fire to esacpe. It’s making too much noise now so something must be wrong. Any ideas?

What kind of anchor should I use to hang a 50 lb. mirror in wood paneling without hitting chimney behind wood?

I am trying to hang a 50 lb. mirror over my gas fireplace, over the fireplace is wood paneling, I’m afraid i’ll drill a hole into chimney and smoke will come billowing through -also afraid of splintering wood. HELP, please.

My pilot light in my gas fireplace keeps going out.?

I’ve lived in my house for 6 years and my pilot light in my gas fireplace has never gone out by itselft until last week. I’ve have lit it 2 times during the week. I’ve decided to give up and just turn it of until I’m going to actually use it. Anyone have any ideas why it keeps going off by itself? Thanks.

I am reasking a prior question. We also want to up our resale value… We are remodeling our house!!?

If you were remodeling and were wanting to up the resale value, and going for a clean look what would you go for???

A. Would burning fireplace?

B. Gas Insert with thermostat control/remote and glass front

C. Gas fireplace with doors

Thanks for your input as my husband as I disagree:)

Have a great day….

advice on a gas fireplace. Would it be worth it to pay 300.00 to move my gas fireplace to the LR for homeheat?

i have a small ranch and ceiling fans the gas fireplace will heat my entire lower level in 20 minutes and then i have to shut it off cuz it gets way to hot….so i was wondering would it be more cost effective to be able to simply turn it on as needed rather than use the furnace as it draws alot of juice and energy just to warm up.
Am I thinking right?

What is the average monthly cost of natural gas for heating in Savannah, GA?

I am trying to gather an estimate of an avg flat rate to charge my tenants because this is covered in my HOA fees that total 0. There is a gas fireplace but no logs in it, however, we are still be charged a percentage of the HOA fee to cover unlimited usage.

I have a fireplace question?

My husband and I recently uncovered a fireplace built into the wall in our basement. it’s been covered over for a couple years it looks like. We have a gas fireplace upstairs already. When we uncovered this one downstairs it looks like it’s got the fire pit itself and it’s been burned in. We don’t have the glass front part of it. My question is… what do we need for it? I don’t think we’d need an insert since it’s already got the firepit and stuff? Do places just sell the glass/metal part? what the heck is it called anyway? sorry to be such a girl…lol

Gas fireplace flame does not go high enough?

My gas fireplace flames don’t get very high. The flames barely reach the top of the logs and there’s hardly any yellow flame so you can barely tell that it’s on–so much for creating a cozy atmosphere. The gas line is turned up as high as it goes and comes directly from the main pipe. There are no other valves outside of the firebox that can be turned and the fireplace valve is turned all the way up. Any ideas? Do I need to buy a new insert? How can I get more yellow flame?
The air control lever…Does a sealed unit have this also–one that draws its air for combustion from outside?

Can we remove our chimney/ fireplace just from the 2nd floor and attic?

We have a fireplace we eventually want to add a gas insert to. For now we want to remove the chimney (it leaks and after trying a number of things it still leaks) and repair the roof.

My question is can we remove the chimney in the attic and 2nd floor (the cement blocks and whatever else is there. We are going to remodel the bathroom, so that wall can be opened no problem.

We like the brick fireplace on the first place, and would like it to remain. We are hoping to add a gas insert someday. So will leaving the cement bricks in the basement & first floor be unstable? Or is it fine? Just seems wierd to have this hole from the downstairs fireplace going up to a floor upstairs.

Also – I assume we will need some duct for the gas insert. Can this go out a wall instead of up? Or should we put a vent in now? About how much space does that use up? I assume more than the size of the pipe itself.

Is this something we’d need a mason for or could our general contractor do a lot of it?
Who would actually put in the vent necessary for a gas fireplace, and will we need to know which gas fireplace we’ll buy?

Sorry for so many questions in one. Answering any of them will be appreciated. :-)
How do I know if the chimney is a support for my house?
Our general contractor is a carpenter as is his father (father / son team). Who would I get another opinion from? A mason? A ‘builder’? About what should I expect to pay for this opinion?
