how do you heat your house in winter?

I am just curious as to how others are heating their house during the winter months. We are looking to reduce our propane bill it just seems that every option we choose ends up being about the same cost without investing ,000 for geothermal (after rebates). We just installed a 91% efficient furnace last year so our furnace is good to go. We also have a free standing wood stove that we use on occasion. The wood stove is old and we don’t trust it while we are sleeping or away for very long. Last year we used about 700 gallons LP and burned probably 1/2 cord of wood. We have a single level 1500 sq. ft. house. We were considering putting a pellet stove in but are unsure how many tons of pellets it would burn to determine if it would be worth it. We also though about installing some of the new ceiling fans that have the space heater in them, but they are 0 a pop and still cost a lot to operate. Just looking for some opinions and no, I don’t want to hang blankets up or shut rooms off because we use all of them. Does anyone use a pellet stove? How much pellets do you burn? Do you like it? Thanks in advance!!!!!

I am either getting a Coal furnace or a Wood Pellet furnace, Which One and Why?

I live in New York State and I am going to get one of these. I have a Wood Burner Insert now upstairs but want a furnace downstairs so I don’t have to do wood anymore. I went and looked at both Coal and Wood Pellet and can’t decide. Please advise me on the pro’s and con’s on both. Help!!

I need help cooling off?

For some reason I stay hot. During the winter when it’s 20 to 30 outside I’m actually comfortable. Now it’s spring going on summer. Me and my wife lived alone until the economy did a number on us. She lost her job and wasn’t able to find another one. We lost our home and had to move in with her mother. My wife’s mom is one of those "can’t run the air it runs up the electric bill" types. We’re forced to stay here because we have no place else to go and my wife decided to return back to school instead of work because work was so hard to find. Our room is a furnace. I can handle it during the day but at night when I’m trying to sleep I lie there in bed and sweat. Our white sheet has fade stains on my side of the bed where the our brown mattress is actually fading onto our white sheet from my sweat. I don’t cover up at all and I have three fans blowing on me. Opening the windows don’t help because the windows do not have screens and bugs namely mosquitoes get in and you can figure out the rest. My wife lies in bed covered up to her neck cold while I lie next to her on fire. Why am I so hot when everybody else is so cold? What can I do to help cool myself off at night to help me get more than 5 to 6 hours of sleep before I have to get up for work? Is there some kind of meds I can take or maybe a cooling product I can buy? I know they make heating blankets but do they make cooling blankets? I know all this sounds stupid but I’m suffering. We’ve lived here for going on four months and every night I get only about 5 hours of sleep and I’m exhausted. Any suggestions would be nice thanks.
Ok the Tommy answerer that was the stupidest answer I’ve ever heard. HIV? Geez night sweats is also a symptom of leukemia but I doubt I have that. Next time think before you answer.

What would cause my fireplace to leak cold air when my furnace is running?

I have a wood burning fireplace that leaks cold air if the furnace is running. If I have a fire built in the fireplace and the furnace starts running, smoke fills my house. Last year was the first year we used the fireplace and it didn’t do that then. Before using the fireplace this year, we cleaned the flue good and the first time we lit it we had these problems. Nothing else has changed that should cause this. Even if we close off the flue after burning a fire and shut the glass doors, it stays so cold in this room due to the cold air leaking in. Any suggestions of what might be causing this to happen? I’m willing to try anything!! Thanks in advance for any advice you might have.

Can I burn a fire with glass fireplace doors closed?

I have a 52 year old house with an old fireplace that was once converted to gas, and has now been converted back to wood burning. Last year when we tried to use it, everytime our furnace kicked on we got headaches. Our air intake is directly opposite our fireplace and I am afraid it is pulling smoke into the house. I think installing glass doors will solve this problem. I saw another question that said this is fine so long as you open your bottom vents? What are bottom vents? My fireplace only has a flue and no additional venting. Help please?!?

Can I retrofit my oil furnace with a heat pump?

I live in Richmond, VA in a 1300 sq ft ranch. I have an oil-fired burner for heating and window A/C units for cooling. My heating system is located in the crawl space. I am considering a heat pump for central heating and air and would like to explore the possibilty of a retrofit as an alternative to a completely new system. I would like some input regarding cost impact of one alternative versus the other. My thought is to remove the existing furnace and reaplace it with the new air handler, connecting to the existing duct system (assuming the duct system is adequately sized to carry the required cooling cfm). Since the oil tank and piping are already in place, an integral oil burner could serve as emergency heat (versus traditional electric). I see potential cost savings by eliminating the materials and labor associated with a new duct system. Thoughts?

Where is the black soot on my plastics coming from?

1. It’s not mold. I live on the 2nd floor of a 3 story condo. I do not have water leaking in from my windows or doors. Since I’m not on the ground floor there is no foundation moisture. Since I’m not on the top floor I don’t have any roof leaks. I have seen a few different cases of house molds, and this is not that.
2. I have electric heat, so it’s not from a furnace, and I change my filters on the heat pump regularly.
3. I don’t use space heaters of any kind, nor do I use an air purifier.
4. I don’t burn candles.
5. I have a fireplace, but it hasn’t been used in over 7 years, and it was cleaned after the last time it was used.
So, with all that being said, where is it coming from? More importantly, how do I stop it? It collects on my plastic trash cans, my dish drainer, plastic picture frames, everything plastic. It even gets inside my refrigerator, and on my ice trays. It is driving me nuts!
No, I don’t use cooking oil. I have non-stick pans and I don’t fry foods.

I want to know why does my furnace and gas stove burn yellow with the blue sometimes? Is it getting air ?

When I turn on my gas stove burner it sometimes burns yellow mixed with the blue flame. My furnace burns like that also. What does it mean and should I have it checked by a repair man or your company? Thank you in advance.

What is the best way to heat my finished basement?

We have a fully underground basement. Walls are poured concrete. Ceilings 8′. Approx 1500 sq feet. 1500 sq feet finished. Elec furnace. Three heat vents open in basement.

In the summer it is fab to go down there to escape the heat but in the winter it is chilly enough that the kids won’t ever go down. I’d guess the temp with just the heat vents open to be maybe 55-60F.

What is a safe and quick way to heat the area? I only want to heat it on occassion to about 70F. I have 2 small electric, portable space heaters but they take forever & don’t get the space much warmer. I’m wondering if something like Eden Pure or possibly a ventless fireplace would do the trick.

On days like today, when we are totally snowed in, it is so much better for the sanity of the entire family if they are down there playing away! :)

Should also add that I am scared to death to handle anything that uses any fuel (propane) so that it is probably not a good option for me.

Thanks Much!
