Recently it has been getting colder, and many times houses in neighborhood use fireplaces. I usually run at night when the fireplaces are in use and was wondering if running with the smell of wood smoke is bad for my health. I am not running with visible smoke in front of me, but can definitely smell the wood burning. What is your take on this?

i eventually want to do all three of these things. in what order should i do them in order to maximize my return on investment in the event i had to move and sell before i completed all three things? there is currently a fireplace now but it is ugly painted white brick and want to replace it with a floor to 5 foot high mantle with granite worked in and a gas fireplace log set. the whole cost of that job would be 5k. i have read that fireplaces add more value as far as home improvements go than any other improvement.

the current kitchen was from the 1960s and redoing that with granite countertops and new cabinets and tile and a new fridge and oven would probably be 10k-15k for the quality we wanted.

adding a bathroom to the basement would change the house from 1 to 2 baths and would probably cost about 5k for the level of quality we wanted.

how should i order these projects?

I have a Temco wood burning fireplace that will billow smoke into the house if the glass doors are left open and only the mesh screen closed with a fire going. It drafts fine with the glass doors closed but then all of the heat goes up the chimney. Also it will draft somewhat better if I open all of the doors and windows in the house, but this defeats the purpose of burning the wood and it still allows some smoking into the house. I’ve had many fireplaces before and never have had this problem. The flue is wide open when I have a fire going in the fire box. I have looked up the chimney pipe and see no visible obstructions all the way to the top. I’m stumped and it’s getting cold in the house…LOL!!! Anybody have any ideas??

I live in a 1920′s house with 3 very small fireplaces. I’d like to convert to gas but all the gas logs I find are too small. Any suggestions?

I have always loved fire and I am so excited to be moving into my first apartment with a wood burning fireplace, however I am also nervous because I don’t know how to use or care for it & I don’t want to get third degree burns before I actually enjoy it. I have a gas operated fireplace/chimney, with glass doors, should I keep them open or closed? I’m not an expert in chimney’s or fireplaces, but the one in our house, hasn’t been used for sometime, so I decided to turn it on because of cold weather.. I also have a cat in the house, the fireplace does have a sort of chain screen to it, I’m not sure what that is used for but that is closed…

My husband and I are remodeling. I LOVE fireplaces, but the one in the house was pretty awful. My husband refuses to replace it with another woodburner. He has suggested gas claiming that they are "ventless." Is that accurate? Do you have to run a gas line into your house or do they run on cylinders? Does anyone have advice as to the finer points of using/having one?

Why do natural gas water heaters, furnaces, fireplaces have to be vented and a natural gas stove doesn’t? They are on for several hours at a time just like the other appliances I mentioned.
