I have been in my home for 7years and have a gas fire place insert, all was fine until last year when some how soot made its way to the exhast side and spewed into the family room. I cleaned it all away and vaccumed the inside of the fireplace as well as the exhaust port, this year I fired it up and it seems fine however I do check and vaccum the soot out every 4 weeks, the glass is cleaned with a recommed cleaner as well. Now the glass becomes clouded and sooted up very quickly and is causing me some concern is there more I should be doing?
Now that winter’s approaching, I’m stocking up on wood for my fireplace because it’s cheaper to run that then the central heat. I usually keep the wood in the back yard but it gets rained and snowed on and it takes forever to dry out before I can use it. How can I store it in my garage without worrying about termites getting into it and possibly infesting my house? Will this even be an issue? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Ok a friend just gave me this really nice homemade fireplace with the electric lighted logs and everything. The fireplace is painted a yucky green color with a nice wooden trim. I want to know how I can get the yucky green color off and maybe STAIN IT or can someone give me an idea of a nice color to paint over the yucky green that will still look nice..
i was thinking of buying a brick color paint and painting the whole thing brick color, and then painting the grey brick lines in it…
I have wood floor, medium to light shades of wood.
We have some rotten pressure treated wood from an old fence that’s since been replaced. Does pressure treated wood lose it’s harmful chemicals when it’s rotten and safe to burn in the fireplace?
It is a ~10yr old Majestic he32tn fireplace installed by the previous owner of the house. I normally keep the pilot light out because I don’t use if often, lighting the pilot requires holding down the knob for ~3 minutes before it lights successfully which takes more than average patience since the spring pressure on the knob is high.
From that point everything is ok and the unit puts out nice heat until about 20 minutes later when suddenly I hear a click/ping and both the flames and the pilot go out.
I just had a service person here today who cleaned the pilot unit, but it didn’t change the behavior. I could swear once I saw it go out then come back on later, but maybe that was a freak accident, it didn’t repeat tonight.
Thanks in advance for your advice!
Could this behavior of switching off (then back on?) be on purpose to regulate temperature? (How would the pilot be re-lit?)
I have never used a fireplace before and just moved to an apartment that has one, but I do not know if it is gas or just a gas starter. There is a short pipe that sticks into the fireplace (about four inches), but it doesn’t have any holes in it and there is a round object on the wall next to the fireplace that has an opening for a key. If it is just a starter, am I able to start a fire with just a butane lighter or do I have to use the starter as well?
The Precious Places® Magic Key Mansion is a large 6 room, 3 story, pink Victorian house with white gingerbread trim and a light blue roof. The house has a beautiful front porch that wraps around the side, a 2-story bay window, and a white fireplace. The house has a green base (yard) with slots near the bottom to insert the Precious Places® magnetic key to move the accessories figures around. The figures and some of the accessories have magnets on them or metal that attracts the magnet on the magnetic key. When a figure is standing on the floor, and the key moves under the floor, it makes the figure appear to "come alive" and move by itself. The key can be used to open and close doors (the knobs are metal), open the fireplace door, and more. The key also activates the 4 working lights within the house, plus a porch light on the front porch!
I am house hunting and have found a home I really like the heating and cooling vents are in the ceiling. I have read good and bad about this I realize heat rises but if i use ceiling fans to circulate the hot or cold air coming out will that circulate enough to keep the house warm without making the electric bill sky high. The home has wood and carpet if that matters. Is on block foundation no fireplace.Any advice would be very helpful thanks.
I’d like to build a mantel around my fireplace using trim. I’m not sure if just the part above the fireplace is called a mantel or the stuff around it, but I’m going to put trim on top and on the sides, whatever that is called. Anyway, I didn’t know if there are any guidelines for what types of materials you can use or how far it can be from the fireplace. It has an insert and brick facade around it. Oh, and also, how do you attach the mantel to the brick? I would assume that the lighter side pieces could be attached with liquid nails, but the top part would actually have to support some weight. Anyway, has anyone done this? I never use the fireplace, but I plan to sell and need it to be okay on a house for sale.
