ideas on how to use my non operational odd little fire place….?

I thought about saving up some money and buying one of those electric ones but I don’t think it would fit over the fireplace.

then I thought what about candles… but its arched . the candles would only make black soot marks on the front.

then I thought plants! I can find some fun looking plants and put them in there with Christmas lights… but the surrounding wood might be damaged by the watering.

then I thought what about a tank with fish in it… but it would look tacky.

I want to do a comfy version of a modern look with a little flare. but that stinking caddy cornered fire place is one thing I can’t figure out what to do with….. what do you think?

and just an update !!! only 5 more days till move in day!!!!!!! I’m leaving for Bakersfield on Friday to get all my furniture and stuff out of storage and bringing it back on Sunday and moving in on Monday!!! I’m so stinking excited!!!

I have a white brick fireplace with a 2 foot hearth and a brown wood mantel. I would like to give it glam.?

I saw some beautiful glass tile and some nice slate tile. The slate tiles have some colored glass tiles mixed with them. would these go with a brick fire place or not. I just want to do like a boarder or something.

how much should I quote for a home?

I have been pre-approved after we found a house that we fell in love with. (we were not shopping, just came upon it and decided lets try). the house is built in 1946, single storey, 1 bath, 2 bedrooms, living room with fire place, kitchen with cabinets, electric stove, dishwasher, no refrigerator, with a small window to living room and door to back yard, dining area is medium size about (10 by 10 feet or less) and opens into a washer dryer room (neither is present). back yard is large and drops off steeply into the river. A shed is out in the back yard. Finally the garage has been converted into a room so there is no garage. I can describe much more in detail but for now 2009 Dallas county appraisal puts house about 000 less than what the seller is asking for. Neighborhood is very small (about 4 streets) historical district, surrounded by some very low income and perhaps even higher crime neighborhood. But these streets have houses ranging from about 80 k to 220 k.

Q: how do i determine a reasonable price to quote, whne I expect there is some work to be done on this house when I move in?
Thanks. I am not asking you for a number that I can quote, but for ideas on how I can make a good quote. How badly I want a house: not very; how badly we want this house: we like this very much; But we do not want to cheat ourselves.

Neighborhood is very small (4 streets for house sale comparisons only). so one bad sale can depress property value easily but a very good sale can pull up values in the neighborhood too.

I need to put in a new fire brick in the fireplace – does anyone know how to do it?

i recently bought an old house – we got the fire engineers to check everything – they said it was all good – i just needed to change the fire brick – they said it was super easy but i am not finding it as straightforward as they explained – does anyone know how to insert the new brick into the fire place?

Any advice on installing engineered wood floors?

In my living room I have a brick fire place. When I install the wood floor I wood like it to appear as if the floor was installed first and then the brick fireplace on top of it. How do I cut the brick to slide the wood planks into the brick to achieve the look I want? What tool would be needed?

Can I cover the vents above my wood burning fireplace?

Ok this is a 2 parter:

We just moved and have a wood burning fireplace we have not used yet, but plan to use in the winter. It has 2 ugly gold vents (look like normal air intake vents around your house but square-hiding an 8 inch or so diameter circular vent under each) and my questions are:

What are these vents for? Are they taking air from inside to fuel the fire? Or does it return heat through those vents into the house?

Also—can I hang a photo frame on top of them? It is a large frame and I could ensure there is some air movement behind by having the frame stick out about a half inch or so if necessary!

HELP!

if it helps the house is built in 1988 and I am pretty sure its an original fire place!

Thanks! My decorating heart cries when it looks at the fireplace all gold-like!

High gas, electric, and water bill?

Just moved into a home that is only 8 years old. In the first month our water bill was , PG& E 0, and Gas 0. We have only turned the AC on twice, fire place isnt connected, we have all energy saving light bulbs, Front load washer/dryer. Electric stove and oven. We did run our pool pump for 24hrs for 2 1/2 straight days. So could have running the pump given us such a high bill. Only 3 people living in the home. We dont have vaulted ceilings. Dont understand meters outside. No leaks anywhere. What can be the problem? Why are all 3 bills so high when everyone around us has them 3 times lower. We have small family
