Ways to keep warm when the power goes out (and thus the house can't be heated) when you have an electric oven?

A snowstorm (25 inches) in the DC area knocked out our power for 2 days. We (2 adults, one kid, one dog, one cat) don’t have a fireplace either, so our house got steadily colder until we camped out at a neighbor’s house. She kept the main floor around 55 degrees (F) by keeping the gas stove going full blast. By the time the electricity was restored and we went back home, it was about 35 degrees (F) in our house.

We don’t have a generator and can’t afford what’s available right now (0 minimum). We will be making a hotel reservation just in case the power goes out again.

Thanks for any ideas on how to keep warm and safe should the power go out again, as another 10-20 inches are expected tomorrow night.

Anyone out there with a "Wood Pellet Heater?"?

I have a small room addition that get quite chilly in the winter time because it has no heat. I was wondering if a Pellet Heater would be good. I want something that needs no installation and is portable. And needs no electricity or venting. Will this type of heater meet those needs? Thank you.

How many Prophets of Jesus or Muhammad does it take to screw in a light bulb?

Jesus said "I am the light" but he didn’t know how to screw in a light-bulb did he..huh did he…he didn’t invent electricity and the only light he knew was cast by fire or the sun or the reflection of the moon. When he went to sleep at night did he TURN OUT THE LIGHTS or was it hard for all the Prophets to sleep around him. Only Judas knew how to Flick his Switch-Hey did you know that General Electric abbreiviates their Name GE-they are an American company made here in The U.S. which you could pronounce Us-so The General Electric American Company could be called GE US but then if you took a lightening bolt and placed it in betweeb the GE and The US like this (Z) then you would have GEZUS! OMG I can see the light it just might make Mu-ham(MAD)!OMG he has ham in the middle of his name wait!-THAT’s PORK-that is forbidden-we must now refer to him as MUMAD-sounds like a Mad-Cow disease-HEY How many Allas does it take to screw in a light-bulb-Alas-this world will never know-MerryXmasnJuly

Amish are SELLING stuff with electric !!!!!!!!!!!!!!?

help, the amish are selling fireplaces at Heatsurgetv.com !!!

I thought they do NOT use plugs and electricity!!! WHAT is going on here, I thought they did not use modern things , but selling stuff on tv is modern, so are that they still considered amish??

I saw a entire Amish family playing putt-putt golf in the summer in long beards, bonets and they were all smoking. They had those hats, and shirts, and boots that LIncoln wore!

Have you ever seen the Heat Surge infomercial? Was it as amusing to you as it is to me?

Electric fireplaces created by the Amish, complete with "real" footage of "real" Amish people making the fireplaces!!

Never mind that the Amish don’t use electricity.

And don’t believe in being video taped.

And don’t pierce their ears.
misslabeled I actually get my information from a friend of mine who’s parents left an Amish colony. And they don’t believe in being videotaped or photographed because it’s prideful and "showing off," therefore "showing off" their heat surges and working in front of the camera is against what they claim to believe in.

Thanks for offering me a reason to explain that further.

Can i start my gas fireplace manually? It turns on w/a switch bt we r supposed to get a storm today/?

How can I get heat to my basement without leaving the door open?

I have an older model pellet stove that heats the house, with corner fans in some of the doorways to circulate the air. The problem is that if I need to keep the basement door shut because of the baby. I don’t want to put a baby gate up and leave the door open because it blocks the hallway. There are no vents or heat ducts in the house. How else can I get the heat from my pellet stove to the basement?
Putting the pellet stove in the basement is a good idea, but I’m looking for a less expensive solution.

Putting a space heater in the basement will use too much electricity.

I need a budget friendly non-electrical way to heat my home. ?

I live in a very very old 4 bedroom home. It has a fire place which only heats up five feet in front of it. I have tried every type of electrical and oil space heater possible and I’m still left with a 400-500 dollar PG and E bill (it normally runs at 0.00). I live check to check and with the economy being what it is I can’t afford to take on any more bills but am willing to pay one set amount for a heater that doesn’t need electricity. And yes, I’ve tried electric blankets too. My children are freezing and the cost of wood is tremendous but necessary. So you see wood + electric space heater = crazy $$$$. Single mom trying her best to keep her family warm. The house does have a heating system, but like I said it’s an old house. It has pipes that heat up the floor but the pipes broke and I can’t use it. My friends say it’s dangerous to use an outdoor propane heater in the house, but how much truth is there to that if I monitor it constantly?

I would like to buy a gas stove?

I want to buy a gas stove because my apt has a gas line thing to attach and not electricity. Anyway, I have no idea how to pick out one. What kinds of things should I look for in terms of safety, design, durability, etc. They have the small 50×50 cm gas stoves with 4 burners and the larger ones with 5 or 6 burners. We have Whirlpool, alot of Bosh, chinese and brands made in Italy. Which should I consider?

Would a coal and wood burning stove be better than using my electrical heating system?

I am thinking about buying a wood or coal burner for my home to cut back on the amount of electricity I use. Is it a good idea?
I live in rural Kentucky.. finding sources of wood will not be a problem.
I am not worried about the cost of wood or coal.. I am more concerned about which would really be better for the environment.
