I have a white brick fireplace with a 2 foot hearth and a brown wood mantel. I would like to give it glam.?

I saw some beautiful glass tile and some nice slate tile. The slate tiles have some colored glass tiles mixed with them. would these go with a brick fire place or not. I just want to do like a boarder or something.

Decorate Wood Paneling? I'm not allowed to paint, or sand, or do anything to the wood paneling.?

My den is so dark, and I have this hideous wood paneling taking up all four walls. Around the fireplace I have dark brick. Any way to brighten it up?

Can I remove the legs from a Vogelzang Durango Wood-Burning Stove on a real rock hearth?

Seen here: http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200339109_200339109
I have a real rock hearth, the company won’t tell me its ok to remove the legs due to legal issues. My teracota flute is encased in solid brick covered by 4" slate rock and the opening to the flute is only 2 foot off the hearth. The hearth is very large, 2 foot off the floor and it too is concreate block with 4" slate rock on top of that. I need to remove the legs on this stove so I can attach the stove pipe. There should be room to sit the stove on 1" fire bricks or other material if needed or on the corners if a 1 inch air flow under the unit is desireable. Thanks in advanced.

Should you mount a flatscreen LED television above a wood burning fireplace?

We bought a new house and the guy who owned it before us is a homebuilder. He said do not mount a television over the fireplace because of the heat inside the chimney an also it would be impossible getting the cords through the studs in the wall and brick. We had our hearts set on putting it there and don’t think it would really hurt the tv. Thoughts?

I have a fireplace that was given to me. I want to use it as a wood only to save on my gas bill but I dont ?

know if I can do that or not.
A friend remodeled their house and had never used the fireplace so they don’t know if it was wood or gas….So how do I find out? Or does it even make a difference?
Also I know I have to build a chimney, is that something that is really expensive to do or can we do it pretty reasonable?
So are you saying if it is a gas fireplace you can not burn wood in it?
There are some fireplaces that can do either or, right?
I guess I should be little more clear, lol.
We have not installed this yet. I want to knock out a window and put in the fireplace, so the depth of it would be outside rather than taking up the space inside. So inside on the wall would be the mantel. Out side we would have to build around the unit and put a chimney up. What I am wondering is the people we got it from never used it but said it was wood or gas but was hesitate so we want to be safe. It is older unit so I dont want to take any chances. It didnt come with any gas piping but that doesnt mean when they remodeled they didnt get rid of it. So I want to know is there a way to tell if it is either or gas or wood or can it be both like they said? And the chimney part I am just curious if anyone has built a chimney and if so is it rather expensive, I heard to do a chimney out of river rock its like .00 a sq ft and that is rather expensive. Is brick cheaper?
Thanks everyone, I am not looking to be cheap and blow up my house, lol

What kind of fireplace do I have, and can I burn wood in it?

I know this sounds like some other ?’s, but I still had to ask. Better safe than sorry. The fireplace I have has the old gas switch in the brick that you need a key to turn on, but the gas line has been capped off. There is a grate for the "wood" that is about 4 inches off the bottom the fireplace. It looks a ceramic brick around the inside. The opening going up to the chimeny is about 8 to 10 inches in dia. I also have a control lever for outside air control. There is a switch on the wall that appears to blowing air. It does have some suction from the bottom, but no air comes out any where in the house. Also when it is turned on, and fire burning, there is a smell of plastic burning. What does that fan do? The fireplace has two chainmail looking screens, and a folding glass door. Can anyone help?????

how should i prioritize the following home improvements? fireplace, new kitchen, bathroom in basement?

i eventually want to do all three of these things. in what order should i do them in order to maximize my return on investment in the event i had to move and sell before i completed all three things? there is currently a fireplace now but it is ugly painted white brick and want to replace it with a floor to 5 foot high mantle with granite worked in and a gas fireplace log set. the whole cost of that job would be 5k. i have read that fireplaces add more value as far as home improvements go than any other improvement.

the current kitchen was from the 1960s and redoing that with granite countertops and new cabinets and tile and a new fridge and oven would probably be 10k-15k for the quality we wanted.

adding a bathroom to the basement would change the house from 1 to 2 baths and would probably cost about 5k for the level of quality we wanted.

how should i order these projects?

Smoke from the fireplace ends up in the basement?

We have a wood burning fireplace in the living room and recently had a gas fireplace installed in the basement. There are 2 separate chimneys, both right next to each other encased in brick all the way to the top. There had never been a fireplace in the basement and the chimney opening there was capped until the new fireplace was installed.
The problem is 3 fold:
The gas fireplace won’t stay lit, the flames go out after a short period of time. The installer was here while were out and told my kids it should be alright after he changed something and then he left but the fire went out shortly afterwards.
Also, cold air is coming into the basement through the new gas fireplace and when we make a fire upstairs smoke finds it’s way into the basement again via the basement firepalce. We bought the gas unit from a reputable, recommended licensed company and they installed it as well but are on holidays for 2 weeks at the moment so we’ve stopped payment. So, what’s up with our chimney?

What is the small metal drawer inside of the fireplace for?

My house has a brick wood burning five place. Inside the fireplace, built into its right hand-side wall, there’s a little metal drawer (iron, probably). The drawer’s face is about 2×4" and it is 4" deep approximately and is about 6" from the floor of the fireplace.

Anyone has any idea what that’s for? I searched the internet without finding any info on it.
