Remodeling stone fireplace?
We moved into a townhome with one of those 80′s style cobblestone fireplaces. The fireplace is in a corner next to the stairs and the stone surround goes from floor to ceiling. It looks very out of date with our modern furniture. I would like to remodel it but we have a very small budget. Could I do something like paint it white and add a nice mantel or something? I don’t want to mess it up since we will be selling in a couple years.

Biggest pet peeve in the world is when people paint over stonework. That’s the last thing you want to do, it’ll look obnoxious and it’ll take the value of even having a fireplace in your house when you go to sell.
To put in a mantel you’ll still have to knock out a significant amount of mortar and stone, it’s a huge mess and a pain in the butt to any mason.
Your best bet is to honestly have the fireplace redone. And unless there are further damages because of it’s age, you shouldn’t have to ‘rip down and re do’ the entire thing.
I’m no mason, but…my dad is…and i worked for his company for yeaaarrss and I’ve seen a lot of stupid ‘remodeling’ ideas (such as painting over). haha.

Contractor Support is very willing to work with us to make sure that we ended up with what we wanted. Yuk,don’t paint.
I did a high end job a few years ago and the homeowner sealed his.It brought out allot of character in the stones,seeing all the grains.Once you paint the stone is ruined forever.
Just my humble opinion.
