I think you should consult your insert supplier/installer before you make any changes. You can also check online with Fireplacesnow.com.

Are you saying that the insert presently has no doors and you are considering putting some on it?
To be totally efficient and safe an insert must be a sealed unit, trapping all of the combustion gases inside, re-burning them and venting them completely and safely up the chimney. Without doors on an insert, or plain fireplace, CO-2 is pouring into your home. Very bad.
